Hello all,
Thought I would try and do a trip report on a 10 day trip my girlfriend and I recently went on in the Amazonas region of Columbia near a small town called Leticia. The first 3 days we spent in a reserve called Tanimboca and this is where we met our guide/instructor Goran Mihajlovic. We decided on making a Puuko knife because of its ease to make and its overall useful design. The steel was scrapped from a VW beetle, it was 1060 carbon which I have some experience with and am happy to use. Overall I am very happy with my first ever knife, the handle needs a bit more work but it fits my hand well and I love the shape of the blade! The sheath was made from the wood from a black palm which is extremly tough and straight grained, then a basket weave around it for retention, all made whilst we were in the jungle. After finishing the knife we trekked out into the Amazon for 7 days of adventuring! and to use the knew knives!

First we set up a base camp, this involved clearing the ground and collecting enough solid poles and palm leaves to make shelters to sleep under and cook under, as it was the wet season we expected to get some heavy downpours. The roof was about a 1 meter thick layer of palm leaves it held up under several serious downpours and we didnt get a drop on us. Lots of animal life everywhere here!

As well as fishing and collecting bush tucker we set traps and went hunting with our other guide Alberto's ancient beat up single barrel shotgun, the foregrip was half eaten by an anteater and the breach was held together with a couple of hose clamps! But it did the job! Alberto is indigenous to the area and made us feel like babies in the bush when compared to his skill! The packs he used to carry all his gear is made from palm leaves woven together, the stems make the from and then he uses bark stripped from trees to make shoulder straps and a tump line. It takes him about 10 minutes to make and could carry a lot of weight! The pig was probably about 50 to 60kgs ;) But ill stick with my Unlimndi :)
