M2016 Butt Pack | $135
Product Page

Video on YouTube
We've answered the requests of customers and persuasive friends with an updated version of the venerable M1956 / M1967 military butt pack. For many in the US, a moldy military surplus M1967 on an alice belt with a couple of canteen pouches (and sheath knife if you were lucky!) was a first field setup and still holds a special place.

Just like the originals, the M2016 Butt Pack can be used as a shoulder bag or mounted on a belt with or without H-Harness. Unlike the original, HPG's new offering is also designed to mount securely on the top of a full sized pack as a floating and compressible top pocket. It comes with a shoulder strap with other carriage options offered separately.

The exterior has 4 different surfaces comprised of First Spear's proprietary 6/12 PALS grid fabric. There are both top and bottom compression straps for adding additional items. The interior is accessed via a full panel opening secured with a #10 zipper and additionally protected with side release buckles. Internal organization consists of a full 6/12 velcro / PALS field next to the removable HDPE frame sheet and a mesh zippered pocket opposite that.

Available in mid-November for $135 in two tone ranger green / khaki and two tone manatee grey / foliage grey. To be notified when it is available, email info@hillpeoplegear.com. Please specify color choice.
Longhouse instructional video series
We've just launched a new instructional video series on YouTube. The Longhouse Instructional Series goes hand in hand with the equipages section of our website with more hands on information including gear and techniques based on our time on the trail. There are folks who have more experience than us, and folks who have less. Whichever camp you're in, we hope you find something of value in this video series. We've also organized our YouTube channel into playlists. In addition to the Longhouse playlist, there is also a product playlist and an in the field playlist.
Product Updates
We have a number of limited runs on the way. Here is a full list of what is in stock now: And here is what is coming in the next couple of months. If you're interested in one of these, click the product to email us and get on the notification list: For those who have been patiently (and even not so patiently) waiting for Mountain Serapes, we have ranger green in stock in both sizes. We'll have multicam in the next couple of weeks.

Temperatures are starting to drop and we're re-stocked on long sleeve logo thermals. We also have an order for polartec logo beanies placed and we'll have those within the next month.

We're discontinuing a couple of items. We have Runner's Harnesses and Pocket Harnesses in stock now, but won't be reordering them due to minimal sales. Gotta keep room on the shelves for things we sell a lot of! So if you've been considering either of those, now is the time.

Want a multicam HPG backpack? The blaze orange palspockets have worked out so well for changing the bulk of a pack's color that we're considering doing a run of multicam Palspockets for folks who want to make their pack multicam from time to time. If you're interested in this, email and let us know.
Changing of the guard
During her tenure with Hill People Gear, Brooke Edwards saw her responsibilities and time commitment grow to the point that her family was often getting the short end of the stick. Finally it got to be too much and she decided to fully clear the way for someone fresh to take over her responsibilities and help grow the company. Brooke is doing well and still very much a friend of HPG. You can follow her photography on https://www.facebook.com/BEdwardsphot....

Kevin McDowell is joining us to take over Brooke's responsibilities as well as a few other things. Kevin was raised in the Mojave Desert of Arizona and joined the Marines shortly after high school. During his time in the Marines, Kevin's duties included deployment to Iraq as a Combat Advisor conducting patrols and raids with the Iraqi Police, loading bombs on FA/18 aircraft on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, and Forward Observer in the Marine Corps Reserves.

After getting out of active duty, Kevin worked as a Range Safety Officer at a shooting range while attending school for forestry. After his studies, Kevin worked for the US Forest Service doing fuels mitigation, timber sale operations, and wildland firefighting -- including a season as a crew member on the San Juan Hotshots.

new look
We're luddite curmudgeons in a lot of ways, but darned if these mobile devices aren't handy tools! It was time to make the website and newsletter much more mobile friendly so here you have it. Along the way, we took the untidy accumulation of 7 years of articles and information and organized them in a way that should make it easier to discover useful information and find what you're looking for elsewise. The new Education section is your gateway to all of our backcountry education resources including our steadily growing video instructionals library. Products have gotten some updates including a new "chassis capacity" metric on all of the backpacks. This is an indication of what the suspension system can handle (but not whether or not you're up for it). For example, the chassis that is shared by the Ute and qui-Ya will handle 300lbs. The new Experience section has information about the HPG design principles and the updated Team page has lists of all of the backountry areas each person has spent time in. Take a look... maybe we've got some stomping grounds in common.
limited runs
The Connor is rapidly becoming our most versatile and popular small pack. We supplied both foliage and custom black ones for use on Fast and Furious 8 (fun movie, worth the watch). We decided we better make a run of black ones in case one of those made it into the movie. The Connor did make it into the movie, but if you blink you'll miss it. And it was one of the foliage ones. No matter, some folks are big on black packs and we expect this limited run to be popular. You can get a black Connor Pack here. Other limited run items on the horizon in the next handful of months:
Our First Design Gets an Update
The Original Kit Bag is the product that started us in business. Although there have been some imitators, Kit Bags are still really the only product of their kind. After 7 years, it was time for a little bit of an update to the original design. Here are the changes:
  • #10 zipper on the main cargo compartment instead of #8
  • rear of the main cargo compartment is lined with PALS cut velcro faced fabric (First Spear 6/12) which allows for the mounting of PALS or velcro backed pouches inside the main compartment
  • single row of PALS on the underside allows for mounting small items such as a knife
all of these additions come at a cost -- the V2 original Kit Bag is $125. We'll have all three primary colors in stock next week. If you're looking to spend less, we still have an inventory of original Kit Bags in stock for $105. Get them before they're gone.
Summer Gathering
This year's summer gathering is shaping up to be a good one. Training opportunities will include hasty shelter construction, introduction to field rifles, and water procurement and treatment. This is a free, family friendly event. More details and registration here.
Get to know Kevin a little better
We first introduced our new operations manager Kevin McDowell last fall. Now you can watch his first "in the field" video of a trip to Zebra Canyon and Coyote Gulch in southern Utah. Kevin shot and edited the video himself, and we hope to see many more. If that trip looks a little warm for your tastes, you can cool down with Evan's video of a spring snowshoe trip.

Above all, get out there and get some backcountry time in yourself!

Aston House BC (backcountry) | $280
* the picture above is a mismatch of colors. production color options are two tone ranger / khaki, two tone foliage / manatee, and solid coyote *
From the time we first came out with the Aston House pack, we knew we were going to do a more backcountry oriented version. The Aston House BC (backcountry) is a simpler single compartment panel loader with wand pockets, but it still has a whole lot of the Aston House trickery built in. It integrates the same top and bottom zipper access right next to the frame, and has a PALS cut compression panel that allows mounting of pouches on the inside or the outside of the panel. The suspension side interior is lined with PALS cut velcro (First Spear 6/12) for any type of organizational pouch you might like. The inside of the panel opening has a 3/4 height mesh pouch, and the outside of the panel has a full height PALS cut zippered slot pocket. We've beefed up the suspension for heavier backcountry loads with dual full height stays. Although we think of this as the backcountry version, a whole lot of folks are going to like it for travel and city use.
Fall in the Field
The HPG team has had a couple of great fall adventures:
Lever Light Mount | $110
Lever actions make great pack rifles for a number of reasons. One thing that every backcountry firearm needs is a weapon light and it has been very hard to accomplish that to our satisfaction until now. The HPG Lever Light Mount clamps securely around the magazine tube. This lets you place the rear of the light directly in front of the handguard where you can activate it naturally regardless of barrel length. It pains us to ruin the svelte lines of a classic firearm so this is a lightweight and streamlined solution that doesn't look too out of place when the light is removed.

FB | Hill People Gear Owners Group
Some time ago, Facebook changed their algorithm so that people wouldn't really see company pages anymore even if they followed those companies. When HPG disappeared from your news feed, that's why. Once we figured that out we quit posting to our company page because there was no point. If you're missing out on those daily pictures and product updates via Facebook, we've got good news for you. Group pages on FB still show up great on news feeds. If you want to start seeing daily pictures, news, and posts from others about HPG on FB, reach out and join the Hill People Gear Owner's Group.
Other Retailers
If you're looking for a bricks and mortar to see our gear in person, or an international retailer, we've got a few options for you...
Winter Skills | Jan 5 - 7 Colorado
This year we're adding campsite preparation and the option to spend one of the two nights outside in a winter snow camp. The class is still geared towards beginners and will be a great introduction to safe winter travel. More details and registration here.
