Up front: I have not used this product, but im excited by its potential.
Water filters have always kind of been a "meh" to me. I have some and use them when necessary but to be honest the cleaning of parts and ensuring the input and output hoses dont touch always seemed like a necessary PITA. Even with the sawyer mini and backflushing. I have thrown away a couple of them because I didnt feel like I cleaned them correctly after use.
Anyway so enter the MSR trailshot, new this year. This is almost a combination of a straw type filter and a sawyer mini. It allows you do drink straight from the filter or use it to fill bottle.
The best part IMO is that it take no special tools to clean! Less crap to lose.
A few of the details.
- Tested: Meets U.S. EPA drinking water standards* and NSF protocol P231 for removal of bacteria (99.9999%), protozoa (99.9%), and particulates.
- Pocket-Sized & Light: 142 g (5 oz.)
- Instant Hydration: Drink directly from the source—without lying in the dirt—and refill your bottles or hydration reservoir with clean water.
- Quick-Deploy: Zero set-up and simple one-handed operation fills 1-liter bottles in 60 seconds.
- Simple to Clean: A few shakes helps restore flow rates in the field; no tools required.
I had to look up the NSF protocol P231. Here is what I found http://standards.nsf.org/apps/group_public/download.php/28835/Comparison NSF P231 v 244-3.pdf
Overall im actually kind of excited to see how this progresses and what the feedback is after it really gets fielded.
