Does anyone have a preferred method of carrying water when only using a kit bag? I've read the Platypus collapsible bottles are a possible solution.

Yup - I carry a 1/2 L Platypus bag in my full size Kit Bag frequently and it works well. I found that a full liter bag was a little too heavy and unwieldy, but YMMV.

How do you clean those hydrapaks?

Soap and water. Let air dry.

I’ve hung a 2L bladder onto a recon harness for short hikes and bike rides. The water in the back helped balance the load. A 3L bladder seems to be too heavy and kept pulling the kit back up towards my neck. Perhaps this could be mitigated with a stabilizer strap, but haven’t tried.

A Recon Harness w/ a 2L hydration bag in it really takes the Kit Bag to a whole new level. I can now carry everything I'd normally carry for a short hike in my Kit Bag, plus water, a place to stow a rainshell, etc.

Quite possible to carry a bottle pouch on the straps of a KB...
