My advice is to get an Inreach Mini and pair it with Earthmate on your phone. You bascially get all the functionality of the Fortrex, plus synced base maps on your phone, plus two way messaging; plus emergency response in something not much bigger than a fortrex.

Can the mini be used like the old gecko or etrex, like to mark the truck than drop a few breadcrumbs on the way to a stand than use it to track back?

It can be used like that. Plus if you pair it with your phone you get maps with the that data too.
