description Description

Alcohol stoves have been eclipsed in popularity by canister stoves. However, alcohol stoves are superior in a number of ways. Fuel is inexpensive and widely available. A gallon of denatured alcohol will last you a long time and is currently around $24. You can also feed it with bottles of Heet which are available in most gas stations. The fuel is safe to carry in lightweight plastic containers. You can see your fuel level at a glance and easily top off prior to burn. There are no cleaning or reliability issues -- you are literally lighting a little tin of pure fuel. There are no altitude related fuel pressure issues to contend with. In colder temperatures, a little bit of time in a pocket next to your body will pre warm the fuel and burner enough for easy starting. It takes about 10 minutes to produce a meal's worth of boiling water in most temperatures. Efficacy is greatly increased by using a full coverage windscreen. The video below shows one DIY option.

The Trangia stove is a decades old design that has no reason to be updated. It has a screw top lid with O ring that allows you to carry fuel inside the container itself. The included simmer ring isn't particularly useful for cooking -- alcohol stoves are good for heating water and moving on with your life. What it is good for is tamping out the burner when you are finished heating your water to preserve the rest of the fuel in the burner. A burner full of fuel is enough for boiling 3 meal's worth of water.
