Kit Bag Danglers (KBD)

Lots of folks use our packs for daily carry in an urban environment and there are more than one that work well for that. With the Commuter, we set out to build a no holds barred urban pack -- without sacrificing HPG comfort and quality. Here are the features of the Commuter Pack:

  • Side entry padded laptop compartment will comfortably fit a 14.5" laptop. The compartment is lined with velcro loop in case you want to carry something else in that compartment in an organized manner.
  • Main compartment is accessible via top and one side panel zip. The rear of it is lined with velcro loop for sub organization.
  • 3/4 height mesh sleeve inside of panel opening
  • Full height cordura sleeve on inside of panel holds a removable foam insert, making the Commuter a padded case for camera gear or electronics
  • Externally accessible dimensional "ditty pocket" will hold glasses with room to spare
  • 2/3rd height velcro loop field on outside of pack is covered by capture flap, making it a good place for items you want quickly accessible but concealed.
  • Bellows capture flap expands large enough to hold a bicycle helmet but lays completely flat when not in use.
  • Compression consists of 3/4" bottom straps and 3/4" straps from the compression panel to the suspension side of the pack.
  • On the right side, the compression panel strap is user configurable to leave no zippers unprotected, the laptop zipper unprotected, or all zippers unprotected.
  • On the left side, the compression panel strap is user configurable to either capture the top of the water bottle pouch or not.
  • Bellows water bottle pouch on the left side has replaceable bungy cord elements for good retention without the use of the top strap. Will expand to fit a 3.5" diameter bottle (standard nalgene) but lays flat when not in use.
  • 3/4" tubular webbing top and side carry straps.
  • "Slick" HPG shoulder harness is the same contour and build quality as the standard one for extreme comfort, but removes the bungy cord tethers and related hardware and replaces the 1" sternum strap with a removeable 3/4" sternum strap.

Folks will probably use this for the backcountry, and folks will continue to choose our more backcountry oriented packs for urban carry, but this is our number one recommendation for urban carry.

Attachment Types Explained
Here are the three different ways that KBDs can attach to host items
Standard Attachment

All Kit Bag Danglers include a Tegris bar which is used to connect the KBD to the MOLLE Column on the bottom of a compatible kit bag - medium and full footprint Original, SAR, and Heavy Recon (as long as it has the MOLLE channel on the bottom). Installation is similar to how the old molle sticks worked, though this method is quicker and less of a chore.

KBD MOLLE Row Adapter

The mounting setup on the KBDs is designed to attach to the MOLLE channel found on the bottom of the Kit Bags. What it does not provide is mounting to a MOLLE row like the front of the Recon Kit Bag, the Prairie and Recon belts, and the front of plate carriers.  The MOLLE Row adapter slides down through the vertical grid to provide the mounting “loops” for the Tegris stick on any of the KBDs. The MOLLE Row Adapter does not need a separate Tegris stick as the loops themselves provide for the mounting setup.

KBD Snubby Adapter

The medium and full footprint Kit Bags share the same MOLLE channel layout on the bottom, so any of our KBDs will fit on both. However, the Snubby Adapter is needed for the KBDs to be properly centered on the Snubby footprint Kit Bags, which have a shorter channel. The Adapter mounts to the Snubby Kit Bag, and then the Danglers are attached to that. The Snubby Adapter comes with its own Tegris attachment stick for attachment to the Kit Bag.  The stick that comes with the Dangler is then used to attach to the Adapter. This adaptor will allow the use of a KBD on the original kit bag, Snubby, and the belt pack.
